My taste for adventure started when I was young and my Aunty took me traveling across Australia from my home town of Melbourne to Perth over on the Indian Ocean. These trips back in the late 1960’s and early 70’s were by train, the trip taking three nights.
In my teens I would hitchhike around my home state of Victoria camping by beaches and in forests exploring the state. At 20, I undertook what I consider my first big adventure riding around Australia on a Norton Commando 850 motorbike.. Then, in 1988 at 30 years of age, my adventures took to the water with a circumnavigation of Tasmania in a small yacht as a precursor to a sailing adventure to New Zealand and the South Pacific.
Since then I have explored many aspects of Australia’s vastness and countries in the South Pacific, Africa, Europe and Asia.
This blog is a mixture of reminiscing and adventures at hand.
What is a Piecemeal Adventurer
Many of us have admired tales of exploration and adventure. For me it was
- Jon Sanders sailing solo round the world single handed in his small 34 foot yacht;
- Tim McCartney-Snape scaling Mount Everest without oxygen; or
- Charley Boorman on his motorbike traveling across Africa.
But being a piece meal adventurer I have to fit mostly my adventures into days and weeks not months and years as I juggle the obligations of work, family and life in general.
So as a piece meal adventurer the tales include those times when the obligations of life are shed and adventure embraced.
Bikes, Boats and Planes
Over the years my escapes into little adventures have been on bikes, boats, and planes.
While travel by plane is solely utilitarian a means of getting from A to B in a quick and efficient manner its a form of travel that lacks souls and places the traveler in a space divorced from time and the elements.
Alternatively, bikes and boats put one in the moment, in the elements, in the wind, the sun and the rain in both cases the vessel/vehicle become one in the pursuit of moving forward in the journey.
So the tales that follow will include elements of journeys primarily by motorbike, by yacht, by plane interspersed with other forms of journeying.
This blog is a mixture of reminiscing of adventures past overlapping with adventures current and still to come – a discontinuous narrative of places and impressions.
Enjoy the adventures!!

Hi Mick,
I found time to read your whole blog. We’ve shared some similar adventures. I like the way you write, concise but you say a lot. Less can be more.
Regards,
Tony Houlihan
Thanks Tony, just got back from a couple of days run away on the bike over Falls Creek. Mick
Also Tony must do a sail soon
Hi Michael
Thank you for sharing your adventures!!! The photos and writing together truly take a person on an adventure and whilst it can not be compared to what it must be like for you living it the reader can not help but be whisked away to other worlds both present and past…thank you for the journey!!!
Jackie
Fabulous – I am going to thoroughly enjoy reading about all your adventures, Michael.
You are a man after cut from the same cloth as Jan and me. ‘Life begins when you leave your comfort zone behind’.
Be safe.

Hi Mick, I just noticed you’ve given a follow to my Elf Girl’s Dream blog. Just to say that isn’t really an ongoing blog any more. I’ve got three other blogs that I keep up and I know you’re following A Bikers Guide to the Dordogne. I’ve also got https://judesphotography.wordpress.com/ https://thewriterinthewoods.wordpress.com/ and https://judethompsonbooks.wordpress.com/
The Elf Girl’s Dream book became ‘The Sleighriders’ and is now on my author blog (Jude Thompson Books). All good fun and I’m currently attempting to self-publish my books in paperback – a marathon task for my aged brain!
Jude 🙂
You are quite prolific Jude
I have lots of time!
Hi, are you OK with me linking your Norway adventures to my blog RideNorway.com?
